How Do Brake Pads Work?

Knowing the inner workings of your car can help you to more easily understand when something doesn't quite sound right and how often certain things should be replaced. Luckily, our team of maintenance experts at Mercedes-Benz of Arlington want to be sure that you know all of the basics of things such as brake pads so that you can do just this.

Brake pads are a device in vehicles which seek to reduce the amount of friction when a brake caliper is squeezing the rotor of a tire to slow it down. Without it, there would be loud, scratching noises every time the driver hit the brakes. Experts recommend getting your brake pads replaced once every 50,000 or so miles. This can however differ from driver to driver. Those who frequently stop and start on their morning commutes may need to replace their brake pads more frequently than those who drive only on a highway.
